SPARK! is a vibrant, high-density mixed-income community in Salt Lake City designed to make a meaningful impact while strengthening its surrounding neighborhood. Thoughtfully designed to honor its industrial context, the architecture draws inspiration from the adjacent power plant through the use of brick, steel, and metal panels, blending a timeless palette of weathered Corten steel and dark charcoal brick at the base with lighter metal panels and bright accents above. Lushly landscaped terraces and rooftop gardens soften the building’s modern form while supporting on-site beehives that provide fresh honey and vegetables for residents. Positioned along Temple Street and adjacent to a TRAX transit station, the development engages the community with a welcoming urban plaza, street-facing retail, and a shared courtyard that connects residents and visitors alike. A 10,000-square-foot childcare facility anchors a prominent corner and includes a dedicated play area, complemented by an additional 4,000 square feet of neighborhood-serving retail. Ground-level open space along the north side of the site features bike trails and edible gardens filled with fruit trees, rosemary, sage, and lavender, inviting both residents and the public to pause, gather, and connect with the landscape. Above, the residential units are organized in a large U-shaped configuration around a private courtyard and multiple rooftop terraces, creating a strong sense of community and access to outdoor space. Through its integration of housing, childcare, retail, open space, and transit-oriented design, SPARK! stands as a dynamic, people-centered community serving young families, working professionals, and the broader neighborhood.
